How to send a fax from a Chromebook

Get your document ready

Check the file in the Files app before sending. Make sure pages are upright, readable and in the right order.

• Google Docs, Sheets or Slides: open the file, choose File, then Download, then PDF Document. The PDF is saved to your Downloads folder.
• Any web page or file you can print: press Ctrl + P, set the destination to Save as PDF, and save.
• Paper documents: many Chromebooks have a Camera app with a document scan mode. It detects the page edges and saves the scan as a PDF or image in the Files app. If yours does not, take a clear photo and save it as a JPG.
• Photos already on your Chromebook: PNG and JPG files can be sent as they are.

Receiving faxes on a Chromebook

Faxes sent to your number arrive in a private encrypted inbox in the browser. Allow browser notifications when asked so you get an alert when a fax comes in. Documents are never emailed. You can view a fax in Chrome or download it to the Files app to print or save to Google Drive.

If you step away, the session signs out after 30 minutes of inactivity by default, which is useful on a shared or family Chromebook. Sign in again with a one-time code.

Tips for faxing from a Chromebook

• Pin the fax site as a tab or bookmark so it is one click away.
• Keep a folder in the Files app or Google Drive for documents you fax often, such as a signed W-9 or a standard authorization form.
• Use the editor for short letters instead of creating a document elsewhere and converting it.
